Women who previously used tampons will gain a slight advantage regarding the others, who used pads. Inserting a tampon is quite not like inserting a menstrual cup.

A menstrual cup, even with a light flow, must be removed and rinsed at least twice every 24 hours, thus every 12 hours. It is however advised to empty it more often when your flow is very hearvy, or before doing any sport or sexual activity.

You'll find here a few inserting methods for the menstrual cup. Some methods will be easier to use with some cups, whether they're more or less stiff, it'll be up to you to find the best method for your own cup.

Here are a few tips for inserting the cup, in case of hesitation or problems.

You may:

  • Have the cup borders wet (insert it under your shower for example) with hot or cold water. What can be a problem is the borders, not the body or the stem.
  • For the first attempts, use water-based lubricant (one you can use with condoms for example). You can keep using it afterwards but you'll be quickly feeling you don't need it, except if your vagina lacks of natural secretions.
  • Pull downwards with the vagina muscles while you're inserting the folded cup, then as soon as your fingers have delivered the cup to its correct position, contract your muscles again to give the cup a "push" upwards. The inserting will be more pleasant this way.

All the folding methods do not apply to every cup nor to each user nor to each life moment. A C-fold method can be perfect until having given birth for example, where the user may need a new size or a new cup, then the Punch-down or the E-fold can become the new perfect folding choice....

The right method is deduced from the facility of insertion, the reliability (absence of leaking), comfort...

Most common and quick folding method: C-fold (demo on a blue LadyCup)

Step 1: flatten the cup between two fingers, with one or two hands

Step 2: fold both corners one towards the other to create a C or a U

Another method that reduces the diameter: Punch-down fold, on a small Alicia

This method would rather be used on quite a stiff cup, for an optimal opening.

Punch-down, Alicia, étape 1

Step 1: press one point on the rim towards the inside of the cup and hold it firmly

Another point of view:

Step 2: carefully press the rims towards the inside of the cup and remove your finger, so as to keep the inside fold in the cup.

What to expect: a border remains locked inside the cup, which makes it easier to insert. Try to hold the cup folded as long as possible throughout the whole insertion process.

7 fold and double 7 fold

7-fold (Seven Fold), Lunette Diana

7 fold on a small Diana Lunette: flatten the cup as for a C-fold and lower it towards a side, to make the figure 7.

Double seven fold, SheCup

Double 7 fold on a SheCup: fold again the largest 7-fold side and lower it downwards. That's a new folding.

 Up

E fold

This is a funny new folding method that can be used even with quite a soft cup, such as a Si-bell or a CupLee. It requires quite a firm grip in the fingers. Demo here with a small Diana Lunette.

E-fold, Lunette Diana, étape 1

Step 1 : pinch one side of the cup. Hold firmly.

E-fold, Lunette Diana, étape 2

Step 2 : lower the side opposite the first fold on a straight line, so it "sticks" to the punched material

E-fold, Lunette Diana, étape 3

Step 3: on each side, turn the rim towards the first pinch. Be careful to firmly maintain the whole thing! Hold the cup as close to the rim as possible, not close the be body (and stem).

Another point of view. The opening is easy to manage with that kind of folding.
